Major stock indexes fell Wednesday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision, while rising tensions with Iran pushed oil prices higher.

While major stocks declined, oil prices surged after President Donald Trump told reporters that the U.S. would strike Iran in response to surprise attacks.

“Any Fed surprise could cause this sell-off to accelerate,” Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, told CNBC. “The news today unfortunately turned back to Iran, and that’s something we did not anticipate when the day began.”

West Texas Intermediate crude increased 6.9% to trade at $89.88 a barrel, while the global benchmark Brent crude futures rose 7.5% to $90.40 a barrel. Investors worried that escalating tensions in the Middle East could disrupt global energy supplies.

According to CNBC, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 800 points, while the S&P 500 fell 0.7% and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.9%.

Technology stocks also declined as investors questioned whether major investments in artificial intelligence would continue producing strong returns.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF, which tracks major semiconductor companies including Micron Technology, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia, slipped 0.4%.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its latest interest rate decision at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Investors are closely watching the decision for clues about future rate policy, which can influence borrowing costs, inflation and market performance.

According to 247WallStreet, uncertainty has grown among investors following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s limited comments about future policy decisions, adding to concerns about the direction of interest rates.

Concerns surrounding inflation, interest rates and rising tensions with Iran have contributed to worries about additional market volatility.

Investopedia reported that the CME Group’s FedWatch tool, which tracks market expectations for Federal Reserve decisions, showed investors were weighing different outcomes ahead of the announcement. QZ.com reported that the tool showed a 70% chance the Fed would hold its policy rate steady between 3.5% and 3.75%.

Warsh is expected to hold a press conference following the decision to discuss the Fed’s outlook on the economy and future monetary policy.
